Government updates ADZ plans

Housing minister John Healey received a positive response from a number of local authorities to his request for potential infrastructure pilot schemes that could make use of accelerated development zone (ADZ) funding.
Birmingham’s City Region Board has endorsed the development in principle of an ADZ for eight transport infrastructure projects across six of the seven participating authorities in the region at its most recent meeting.
Sheffield City Council is also reported to be looking at setting up an ADZ. Council leader Paul Scriven (pictured, left) said: “We see an ADZ as a major tool to be able to go ahead with regeneration projects”, and he wants the government “to bring forward legislation to allow us to do it as a local authority area”.

A Northumberland boost for Community Land Trusts

The HCA is backing a Community Land Trust (CLT) to build four houses on Holy Island off the coast of Northumberland. The development will cost £650,000, with £212,000 from the HCA and the rest from the Tudor Trust and the Holy Island of Lindisfarne Community Development Trust.
This is the first time the HCA has been involved in a CLT and it is very likely to be followed by larger such investments elsewhere in England.

Public funds needed to rescue the London Olympic Village

The Olympic athletes’ village in Stratford, costing up to £1.1 billion, had been planned to be at least 50% privately funded, but the government has now had effectively to nationalise the project after the Olympic Delivery Authority’s (ODA’s) development partner Lend Lease struggled to raise funds.

New investment model for rented housing

The HCA’s first investment vehicle, announced this month, will purchase up to 2,000 houses and flats in the South East and convert them mainly into student accommodation.
With a planned budget of £200 million, the scheme is to be run by the Bespoke Property Group and Unite, a specialist in student housing.
